Why Does UK Celebrate Mother’s Day on a Different Day?

You might’ve come across this at some point in your life that the UK celebrates Mother’s Day way earlier than the actual date of International Mother’s Day. Do you know why that is? And do you know why we celebrate Mother’s Day at all? Well, let’s have a look at the history of this day and understand how these traditions came into being.

Mother’s Day as celebrated internationally by everyone around the world, came into existence in the early 20th century when Anna Jarvis, a social activist in the US, set out to fulfill her mother’s lifelong dream to see a special day recognizing mothers all around the world.

In the UK and many other countries, the idea of Mother’s Day comes from the tradition of Mothering Sunday. Mothering Sunday is a tradition honoring the mother church, a church where one is baptized and becomes the “child of the church”. The day is celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent when people who used to leave their towns and cities for work would return to their mother church to offer services. Today, this Christian tradition has taken a much more modern form and is now celebrated as Mother’s Day in the UK.

Celebrating Mother’s Day

Traditionally Mother’s Day in the UK was celebrated as a Christian event, where people would return to their hometowns on the fourth Sunday of Lent to offer prayers and services to their Mother Church. The kids would pick up flowers on the way and offer them to their mothers – a gesture that has symbolically still remained intact today.

Today as the traditions have morphed into more modern times, the celebrations too have changed a lot. Now, kids and adults honor their mothers and other maternal figures in their lives, by giving them gifts, spending time with them, and doing fun activities to show their love and respect.
