Background

Simnel cakes are traditionally decorated with 11 or 12 marzipan balls depicting the 11 disciples and, perhaps, Jesus Christ. According to folklore, the cake was called after Lambert Simnel, who worked in Henry VII of England's kitchens around the year 1500.
